Battlefield Redsec is live now for everyone, free-to-play across all platforms. This is the new sub-section within Battlefield 6, one with its own modes. We’ve covered everything included in this package in a different guide, so we’re going to focus on battle royale in this one.
Depending on how familiar you are with the Battlefield series, or Battlefield 5’s Firestorm BR mode, you may be surprised about the specific quirks – and core features – of this particular battle royale mode.
Here are our best tips so far after playing Redsec BR.
Fights take place at long ranges
This one may be a bit obvious to anyone familiar with how battle royale games work, but it is especially true in the case of Redsec BR. Due to a combination of the amount of HP you have, the number of armour plates you can equip, character movement speed, weapon accuracy and more – you’re not likely to find yourself in too many close-range fights.
This obviously doesn’t go for very early-game, or just after you drop and everyone scrambles for a weapon. If you make it out of that, you’ll be taking shots at distant targets most of the time, and the same is true for your enemies.
Thanks to the game’s impressive destruction, close-range encounters – especially those that take place around buildings – will involve more than simple gunplay. Keep all that in mind when you choose a Custom Weapon from the drops.
You don’t last long while downed
Building on our previous point here, downed players have surprisingly little health in Redsec BR. While you can move around and make it a bit harder for enemies to finish you off, if they’re close enough to see half of your body or more, you’re going to last maybe one second in that downed state.
It goes without saying that finishing off a downed player may not always be the right play, but if you’re expecting to remain downed for 20 seconds or more as you try to help out your alive teammates by calling out the location of your attackers, you’re in for a rude awakening.
Your best option is being dragged and revived by a squadmate, preferably a Support player as they can do it the fastest. You can also find Defibrillators as Chest loot that can be used to revive squadmates faster.
Know the different Chests
As you explore the map of Battlefield Redsec BR, you’ll come across different types of Chests that contain everything from weapons, armor plates, ammo, Gadgets, throwables, usable Call-Ins and more. Common Chests are, well, the most common, and they’re always green.
The black-and-red Chests are Rare, and they’re a bit harder to find. They contain higher rarities of the same sort of equipment found in Common Chests. Rare Chests also have a higher chance of containing Strike Packages like artillery strikes.
The most important type, however, are Class Chests, which are orange and have all the class icons on them. The contents of these Chests vary depending on which class opens them, which is why it’s best to leave them to an under-equipped squadmate whenever you can.
Depending on the class of the player who opens them, they may drop an Assault Kit, or a Recon Kit etc. They also contain upgraded weapons that fit within that class’ Signature Weapon, so an Assault player will get a decked-out AR and so on.
The same is true for the types of Gadgets found within Class Chests. It’s always a good idea to have one of your squadmates – who’s ideally playing a different class – open up one of those chests to get useful items that will be of benefit to the entire squad.
Completing Missions is the fastest way to get a Custom Weapon Drop
As we previously covered, there are different sources that lead you to Custom Weapon Drops. If you’d rather not wait for the match-wide event that drops a bunch of those, or you’d like to avoid fighting other players for them, the best and most straightforward way to get a Custom Weapon Drop is to simply keep completing Missions.
Many Missions will, upon completion, reward you with your own Custom Weapon Drop that the entire squad could use. You can always use another one later – either as a reward from a different Mission or through the public ones – to get your second Custom Weapon, so your full loadout is customised.
It’s worth noting that not every Mission will reward a Custom Weapon Drop. Be sure to read the Mission description and the reward screen before you accept a Mission. As a general rule, the more risky the mission is – including Counter Missions – the higher the value of the rewards.
Don’t hoard Upgrade Kits
Upgrade Kits have been causing a lot of confusion amongst players about how they work, so let’s break it down. In simple terms, Upgrade Kits raise the rarity level of your weapon, so long as it is below Advanced (purple).
Each Upgrade Kit can only upgrade a single weapon once, and it’s only viable for the same type of weapon it’s meant for. If it has a Shotgun icon on it, you won’t be able to use it on an AR, for instance.
There are two ways to use an Upgrade Kit. When looking at it in-world with the corresponding weapon type equipped, you can immediately use it without having to pick it up first. The other way is to pick up a few, and open your inventory to see which of your equipped weapons have the Upgrade prompt (also signified by the green animated arrows pointing upwards). Hold the Upgrade button and the right one will be consumed.
This is why it’s best to share Upgrade Kits that you either no longer need – because your weapon is at Advanced or above, or it’s one you have no use for. By using it, you get to choose between two upgrade paths – which translates to one particular attachment over another. Think scope vs larger magazine.
Vehicle ammo is precious, don’t waste it
Much like Firestorm, vehicles in Redsec BR spawn with limited ammo for all their weapons. Spamming fire like you would in multiplayer is a very bad idea. They all have the same vehicle loadouts, too, meaning there’s no opportunity for counter-play by equipping things that speed up your reload, for instance. Keep an eye out for Resupply Stations scattered around the map when you’re in need of ammo, or repairs.
If you run out of ammo and you don’t have any way to resupply, you can still use vehicles for cover. One common tactic is to climb inside, spot your targets, and leave the vehicle to shoot at them. When you’re hurt, you can jump back into the vehicle – though do note that you won’t be able to plate up inside.
Even without ammo, vehicles can be incredibly useful, so make sure there’s an Engineer around to repair them when rockets start flying at you. And certainly don’t abandon them just because they ran out of ammo.
