It’s not necessary to buy all gold generals and upgrade them. I’m writing so, because in this particular game, it’s sometimes better to buy weaker generals and upgrade them. It’s all because of the history battles.
You can use just selected generals in history battles. And rewards from h.b. will greatly improve your combat efficiency. Especially in conquest.
Conquest hard mode tips
I remember, that I used to give up, because enemies would always destroy my allies, and basically I had to wipe them all by myself.
Of course allies will help you, but you have to count with the fact that your allies will be always weaker.
So remember, never give up, it’s pretty common, that your enemies will launch huge, really huge spam.
However it’s really effective to build some defensive line, which will contain of fortress and infantry spam( militia) + use gas.
It works every time. Always, when you are under big spam, you can use that tactic and the spam will eventually become smaller and smaller and you will be able to push.
Really good way of pushing, is to recruit cavalry or infantry with highest mobility and try to breakthrough spam with use of military tactics as march or forced march and destroy cities with air bombing and blast and then capture them.
Remember that you also have to push with your basic infantry. And start to spam in conquered cities, so you will surround the spam and destroy it even faster.
Don’t worry about high number of rounds, because you will kill so many units, that just killing of units will give you enough points for S mark.
