Getting essence in The Forge is your ticket to faster, bigger profits and better gear. Different kinds of essence enhance your gear to higher levels, and you can sell rare essence for comparatively large sums as well. That said, the way you get essences in The Forge means the higher-tier ones that bump up sell values by much larger amounts are out of bounds until you get better gear and can take down stronger foes.

How to get essence in The Forge
The only way to get essence in The Forge is to defeat enemies. Every enemy drops essence, but the type of essence depends on the tier of the enemy you’re challenging. For example, a standard zombie is likely to drop a tiny- or small-grade essence, while an elite zombie is going to yield something better, and a brute zombie has a higher chance of dropping, say, a medium essence.
TL;DR, if you want better essence, defeat stronger enemies. Getting to the point where you can do that safely will take time. So just play through the game, upgrade your gear, and you’ll eventually start harvesting better essences, which sell for more and let you craft stronger equipment.
Selling essence is one of the easiest ways to make money in The Forge, but don’t forget to keep plenty of essences on-hand for enhancing equipment.
What about legendary essence in The Forge?
Legendary essence doesn’t exist yet, though you’ll see it in certain high-tier upgrade recipes. The Forge developer will add it to the game at some point, though there’s no word yet on when that might be. Until then, those legendary-grade pieces of gear will have to stay out of reach.

Where to get Greater Essence in The Forge
Greater essence might not be the most valuable essence, but it is the easiest of the higher-tier essences to get (and is necessary for the first round of enhancements that start pushing you further toward The Forge’s endgame). The best place to find greater essence is in the Volcanic Depths, where you’ll run into Deathaxe Skeletons and Elite Deathaxe Skeletons, among other tough monsters. These two skeleton types have a roughly 12 percent and 16 percent chance, respectively of dropping greater essence. That doesn’t sound like much, but it’s easier and faster to get than aiming for superior essence.
