A year on from its launch, former Blizzard devs’ Wildgate only has one last update left, but it’s not shutting down

Welp, almost a year on from its launch, Wildgate’s story is coming to an end. For a refresher, this is the sci-fi shooter from Moonshot Games led by Starcraft 2 lead designer Dustin Browder. This obviously all sounds a bit sad, and it will be for some out there, but this final update isn’t as doomy and gloomy as it could be.

As Browder shares in a Steam blog post, the next Wildgate update coming next month will be its last one “for a while.” He explains, “Despite all our attempts to bring new and more players into the game, Wildgate hasn’t found a large enough audience to sustain ongoing development.” The upside to this is that Wildgate won’t be unplayable from this point on. In fact, it will “continue to receive occasional updates like bug fixes, balance updates, and small events, activations or rewards that generally repurpose existing content,” with a small crew keeping an eye on servers.

In fact it sounds like it will be quite customisable, allowing for future communities to spring forth if the game were to be so lucky. That’s in part thanks to the addition of custom games, putting the rules into your hands for some bespoke game modes. On top of that there will be a one year anniversary celebration in the form of sprays, a new title, alongside some other new items. Mode selection will also be getting a revamp “for you to better understand what games you can jump right into and play.” And the game’s seasonal events will still rotate in their respective seasons.

I’m also pleased to say that it doesn’t sound like there are any layoffs planned right now, with Browder noting that “everyone at Moonshot will be focused on R&D projects (which we’re excited about but can’t talk about yet).” For a game half shutting down, this does sound like the best case scenario, so I’ll take it. Wildgate is available to pick up on Steam at a hefty discount, so if you want to give it a go ahead or anticipation of this last update, you can do so right here.
