Amazon eyes Alien actress Sigourney Weaver for live-action Tomb Raider series

Alien actress Sigourney Weaver is in talks to star in the live-action Tomb Raider adaptation from Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

That’s according to Deadline, with the publication reporting Weaver – who is about to appear in Avatar: Fire and Ash as Dr. Grace Augustine – is now in active negotiations for a role in Amazon’s series. At the time of writing, nothing has been finalised with Amazon, and it is unclear who she would be playing should negotiations prove successful.

Along with James Cameron’s Avatar films, Weaver has also starred in the likes of Gorillas in the Mist, Heartbreakers and Ghostbusters throughout her expansive and acclaimed career. Should her next roles include Tomb Raider, Weaver would be joining Game of Thrones’s Sophie Turner, who is set to portray Lara Croft in the live-action series.

Another confirmed cast member is British actor Martin Bobb-Semple, who will have a “major” role in the series. While nothing has been confirmed, there has been speculation online that Bob-Semple will play Lara’s friend and tech-expert Zip, a character that features prominently in the games’ Legend timeline.

Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge will serve as the Tomb Raider series’ creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner. Jonathan Van Tulleken, meanwhile, will be director and executive producer, along with Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer. Filming is expected to kick off early next year, on 19th January.

Along with its live-action series, Amazon is also working with Crystal Dynamics on the next Tomb Raider game. While official details on the upcoming release are still slim, a Tomb Raider announcement has been confirmed for The Game Awards later this week.

Meanwhile, the second and final season of Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime is due to release tomorrow, 11th December.
