Slow life sim Heartopia is absolutely brimming with adorable – and improbably round – animals. Catching, caring for, and occasionally (somewhat jarringly) cooking a wide variety of critters is at the heart of most of the game’s seven major hobbies, which include cat care, dog care, birdwatching, bug catching, and fishing.
Outside of your character’s hobbies, though, there’s a whole separate section of Heartopia dedicated to befriending wild animals. In the case of creatures such as rabbits and deer, you don’t adopt a specific animal, but rather develop a friendship with the species as a whole – and it all begins with feeding them at their respective troughs.
Troughs are feeding stations dotted around Heartopia, each one located in the proximity of where these animals like to roam. However, with the sole exception of the tutorial quest for this mechanic, you won’t get any help finding them – and with eight species to befriend, locating the tucked-away ones can be time-consuming. Or you could just use this guide to help you find the locations of all the Species Troughs in Heartopia.
Heartopia animal trough locations
Each of the eight wild animal species in Heartopia has a spawn location where they like to hang out, and their sole Species Trough can reliably be found in that vicinity:
Heartopia Panda trough location
Heartopia’s panda population can be found towards the outer edge of the Forest region, specifically the area to the south around the Jump Puzzle where bamboo grows.
The pandas’ trough is located close to the stairs leading up to the Jump Puzzle platforms. The trough is to the stairs’ right as you face them, shaded by a bamboo plant and itself seemingly carved out of a giant bamboo stalk.
Heartopia Capybara trough location
The capybaras in Heartopia can be found in the Onsen Mountain region. They make their home in one of the highest parts of the mountain, beyond the geyser pool as you approach via the mountain path.
The capybara trough can be found at the edge of the crescent-shaped pool where capybaras can often be seen swimming. This pool is located in the north-western part of the mountains, just east of the ruins.
Heartopia Bunny trough location
Bunnies are the only wild animal species in Heartopia to make their home in the suburbs surrounding the town centre, rather than one of the outer regions of the map.
Their trough is located just off a path in the south-western suburbs leading towards the Flower Fields as you leave town, between a pond directly to the south and the area bus stop slightly to the north.
If you’re still having trouble getting your bearings, go to Home Lot #2 and follow the path opposite leading back towards town; the trough will be on your left.
Heartopia Fox trough location
Foxes in Heartopia can be found in the approximate middle of the Flower Field region, around Meadow Lake.
To find their trough, locate the windmill that sits just across the path at the southern tip of Meadow Lake. The trough is at the foot of the flower-covered hill the windmill is built on.
Heartopia Sea Otter trough location
Sea otters are perhaps Heartopia’s easiest wild animals to locate, since they have a very prominent hangout spot on the rocks between the two piers at the Fishing Village. Their trough is right there too.
Heartopia Ferret trough location
The ferret trough is one of the hardest wild animal locations to find in Heartopia: ferrets seem to have a slightly larger roaming area that most of the other wild species in the game, and the trough itself isn’t in a location that particularly stands out.
To find the ferrets and their trough, travel to the Flower Field region and locate the northernmost windmill, near the bridge across the river. The ferret trough is further along the path leading away from the windmill as you approach from the bridge.
Heartopia Silka Deer trough location
Silka deer reside in the Forest region of Heartopia, and can usually be found near the lakes towards the inner parts of that area’s map.
The silka deer trough is located at the middle of Forest Lake’s shoreline, very near to the water’s edge at the lake’s easternmost curve and just across a path.
Heartopia Alpaca trough location
Heartopia’s alpacas are native to the Flower Field region, specifically the slopes overlooking Purple Light Beach. This is where the daily Yellow Duck Jump Puzzle and Bubble Machine Challenge events take place, so if in doubt, head for the giant inflatable rubber duck that’s docked just out to sea.
The alpaca trough is at the crest of the hill sloping down towards the beach, just off the path that leads towards a bridge across the river to the south.
Gently observing and befriending wild animals won’t wear your Heartopia character out too much, but for the more strenuous activities on offer, it’s still worth knowing how to regain stamina in Heartopia.
