Monster Hunter Wilds is, as you’d expect, all about tracking down a range of monsters and slaying them. Slaying them comes with its perks, such as an increase to your Hunter Rank and an abundance of materials and monster parts to forge into armor or weapons, but Monster Hunter Wilds isn’t just about slaying beasts. Sometimes, you need to capture monsters instead.
Capturing monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds has a few benefits. Not only is it regularly a quest objective after wrapping up the game’s story, but it’s quicker than slaying monsters, and often provides players with rare materials. If that sounds good to you, here’s how to capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds
To capture a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds, you will — as always — need to prepare accordingly before embarking and tracking down the monster you wish to hunt. To prepare for capture, you want to bring along at least one Pitfall Trap, Shock Trap, and a few Tranquiliser Bombs.
These can all be crafted via your Tent at any camp. Crafting the Shock Trap and Pitfall Traps will require you to purchase Trap Tools from the Provisions Stockpile at any Base Camp first.
On top of that, take a look at the monster you’re hunting in the Field Guide. Here, you’ll be able to view exactly which traps and elements are effective against each monster type. This is especially important, as not all trap types can be used against every monster. For example, the Jin Dahaad will not be affected by Pitfall Traps, but can be caught using Shock Traps.
When you’ve checked out your chosen monster’s weaknesses and are ready to go, make sure to have the relevant items — a Pitfall Trap, a Shock Trap, and a few Tranquiliser Bombs — in your personal Pouch before setting off. No use turning up to a monster hunt without them!
Begin hunting the monster until you have successfully weakened them. You will know when they are weakened as they will begin to limp between areas, or if they’re a flying creature, you’ll notice that their flight path is a little awry.
When weakened, equip your trap and place it near the monster and lure them into it. If they have been stunned, you can place the trap right beneath them and they will be trapped as soon as they get up again.
Once the monster is trapped, you need to act fast and throw some Tranquilizer Bombs at them. One or two should do the job and send the monster to sleep, and that’s your capture completed! The trapped, sleeping monster cannot be carved for parts at the end of the hunt — unlike when you’ve slain a monster — but you will be rewarded with various materials and other rewards as a result!
