How to help The Small Bourgeon in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Throughout Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll meet all manner of curious creatures and rather horrifying, hostile Nevrons. That said, there are some Nevrons across the world that – instead of fight you – would rather elicit your help, and The Small Burgeon found in the Overworld is one of these.

You’ll meet The Small Burgeon after your time in Flying Waters, where they’re ultimately found hanging out on their own, all sad, and desiring to be as big and tall as their fellow Burgeons. This is where the help of Lune, Gustave, and Maelle comes in. Here’s how to help The Small Burgeon in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Where to find skin for the Bourgeon in Clair Obscur

The Small Burgeon is easily found after making your way through Flying Waters and back into the Overworld again. Instead of going straight ahead into the very enticing red meadow, Ancient Sanctuary, which is where the main story continues, you want to go left – around the small rock and trees – where you’ll see a portal (shown below).

There is also a small terminal to the left of The Small Burgeon Portal that activates a bridge back to the pre-Flying Waters area of the overworld, if you need it.

Inside the portal, you can grab the Expedition 53 Flag, which gives you a fast travel point to The Small Burgeon’s entrance. Continue further ahead, however, and you’ll be able to meet and interact with The Small Burgeon (shown below).

This Small Borgeon wants to grow, and to do this he must ingest ‘skin’ that is the ‘same kind as me’. This sounds pretty ominous to begin with, but rest assured, this Nevron is referring to the skin worn by the other hulking Bourgeon’s found in Clair Obscur. It’s the skin item that makes them big, hence why this little fella remains so small.

Getting your hands on skin for the Small Borgeon is no easy feat either, as it requires you to kill one of the large Bourgeon’s found around the map. Fortunately, the first of these that you can run into is found in Flying Waters, with a second found in Stone Cliffs, though the latter has some minions for company.

For the sake of making this as easy as possible, we recommend fighting the Bourgeon in Flying Waters if you haven’t already. You’ll find them a short walk away from the Lumerian Streets fast-travel point (also known as the Expedition 48 Flag).

From the flag, turn around so you are facing the narrow path between two buildings, with some lampposts just ahead (shown above). Approach the lampposts and take a left. You’ll soon arrive at a small cave containing the Burgeon, and despite his intimidating size, he isn’t too troublesome to take down.

He is, however, capable of eating one of your expeditioners, leaving you with just two units to fight with. You want to try to attack him quickly and stun him often so that this doesn’t happen. Fortunately, when he eats an expeditioner, he doesn’t damage them. It just means you’ll have less turns to use for attacking him, which can be risky business. Bear that in mind!

Upon defeat, the huge Nevron will drop its skin, which you can then give to the Small Borgeon back in the overworld.

Speak to the Small Bourgeon further, and he’ll say that you can come back later to witness his growth. How endearing! Much like Dark Souls, you don’t need to come back here at a specific time; you can simply exit and reenter The Small Burgeon’s Portal to witness his transformation.

This time around, however, he is no longer small. Speak to the now Grown Burgeon and he will drop a Colour of Lumina out at you as a quest reward. There’s more rewards to wield yet, though, and that’s by attacking the now not-so-small Bourgeon.

Should you attack the Bourgeon in Clair Obscur?

If you exhaust the Bourgeon’s dialogue by asking about their Mistress, and then choose the ‘Attack’ option, you will commence battle with the Nevron. Fighting this fella – the Grown Bourgeon – is much like the battle for the Bourgeon Skin you’ll have completed in Flying Waters, so there isn’t too much to worry about here.

Once defeated, the Grown Burgeon drops five Colour of Lumina and one Polished Chroma Catalyst. Killing them appears to have no repercussions, so you might as well do it!
