How To Increase Inventory Space In Hytale – Backpack Upgrade Guide

Your starting inventory space in Hytale is likely all you need early on. You won’t have access to a huge amount of resources or gear yet, so your inventory is plenty for what you need until you build a chest for extra storage. However, as you go along, you’ll find more and more materials to pick up, which fills up your inventory quickly. While you might think you’ll always be left with the default inventory size, that’s not the case in Hytale.

How to unlock the backpack in Hytale

To increase the size of your inventory, you need to unlock and use the backpack in Hytale. The backpack is a separate item from the default inventory, but its sole goal is to give you more slots to put items.

Fortunately, the backpack is unlocked fairly early on in Hytale, as all you have to do is upgrade your workbench to tier two. You can read about all Hytale workbenches in our previous guide, but getting a workbench to tier two requires the following resources:

  • 20x Iron Ingot, 20x Linen Scraps, 30x Copper Ingot
Upgrading to a tier two workbench

Once you have those resources, approach your workbench, choose the option to upgrade it to tier two, and then you’ll have an entirely new set of recipes unlocked. One of these recipes is the backpack, which can be crafted using these resources:

  • 8x Iron Ingot, 16x Medium Leather

Medium Leather is acquired through the Tanning Rack station, while Iron Ingots can be smelted at a Furnace after you get some Iron Ore. With these resources, go to your tier two workbench, and craft a backpack from the “Tinkering” tab. After crafting the backpack, you’ll see a piece of paper in your inventory. Equip that in your hand, right-click to learn the recipe for it, and then the backpack is permanently added to your inventory, giving you access to nine additional slots.

How to upgrade the backpack in Hytale

While a standard backpack is helpful, an expanded backpack is even better. Just like all Hytale weapons, you can upgrade your backpack to increase your inventory space even further.

To upgrade the backpack from tier one to tier two, you need access to a tier three workbench. If you have a workbench with that tier, go to the “Tinkering” tab again, and use these resources for the “Backpack Upgrade I”:

The Backpack Upgrade I doubles your added inventory space, giving you a total of 18 extra slots. However, you can go up another notch and craft the Backpack Upgrade II. That doesn’t require a workbench, but instead, you need to restore 100 Memories at the Forgotten Temple.

Inside any Forgotten Temple on the map in Hytale, go through the Forgotten Temple Gateway (portal) in the center of the structure and find The Heart of Orbis, a white statue that’s usually in the center of the temple after you’ve gone through the portal. At The Heart of Orbis, you can interact with it to view the Memories screen.

Mobs are the key to upgrading the Backpack for a second time.

Memories are restored by encountering and interacting with different mobs in Hytale. This includes friendly creatures, enemies, and anything else that moves. Once you’ve encountered 100 different mobs, you can craft the Backpack Upgrade II from the Memories screen by using these resources:

These materials are very advanced and can’t be acquired until you’re hours into a playthrough of Hytale, so don’t worry about them if you’re just starting out. Focus on the initial backpack, upgrading your workbench, and the Backpack Upgrade I for a majority of the early game, and you’ll eventually be able to get the second upgrade.
