How to search for the Black Flame in Monster Hunter Wilds

As your adventure in the lava-spewing Oilwell Basin of Monster Hunter Wilds roars into action alongside the Everforge and the season of Firespring hots up, you’re tasked with tracking down the mysterious and imposing Black Flame, the ancient apex predator of these parched lands.

However, with its stripped back exploration and streamlined quests, this is probably the first time in Monster Hunter Wilds that you’ve actually had to search for something yourself. And as such, like a lot of systems in Monster Hunter, let’s be honest, how you should actually go about searching for the Black Flame is not very well explained.

Here’s what you need to do!

How to search for the Black Flame in Monster Hunter Wilds

To track down the Black Flame, you need to drink a cold drink item to counteract the effects of the Firespring, then leave Azuz and the Everforge and search the Oilwell Basin.

As you roam the area, the green scoutflies which highlight useful items for you will pick up a monster trail on the ground.

Once you’ve interacted with enough of these monster trails, you will get a quest marker for the Black Flame and then be able to ride your Seikret to find them as you have for every other hunt so far.

It’s a little bit odd for the game to make you do this just once with only this monster, but at least it’s a reminder of the system for later on when you’re more self-directed in your hunts and surveys.

Before Seikrets were introduced to the Monster Hunter series, this is how you used to have to track down every monster you wanted to hunt – but in Wilds it’s largely been replaced by already populated map markers and riding your Seikret to wherever you need to go.

Interacting with monster trails not only gives you a scout fly marker to follow, but can also give you free materials from that monster’s reward chart or some Monster Broth.

But now you know where to find the Black Flame, the fun part begins: the actual battle!
