The First Berserker: Khazan’s Spirit of Advocacy is a helpful aid against tough Guardians if you find you’re struggling in battle or just need something to distract your foe. It’s easy to ignore this handy feature if you aren’t actively checking out the game’s menus, though, and even easier to leave it in a weakened state.
Our First Berserker Khazan Spirit of Advocacy guide explains how to unlock and use the Spirit and how to level it up so it lasts longer than a few seconds.
How to unlock the Spirit of Advocacy
The Spirit of Advocacy unlocks automatically after you defeat the third main boss, the Revenant of Adversity. That happens roughly four or five hours into the game, and it’s impossible to miss. If you’re struggling with major fights before then, make sure you’re using one of Khazan’s best weapons, and brush up on how combat in Khazan is different from Dark Souls.
Anyway, once events unfold after that battle, you’ll start noticing a bright white light near boss arenas, near where your Lacrima respawns if you fall during a Guardian battle. Interact with this light to summon the Spirit of Advocacy before challenging a Guardian. It functions essentially like a helpful NPC summon in Elden Ring and will fight alongside you.
You need Lacrima of Circulation to summon the spirit, which you get by summoning and defeating more Revenants of Adversity. Revenants of Adversity summon spots are placed on the ground like antagonistic Elden Ring summons, little red spots waiting for you to interact with them. Unlike Elden Ring’s NPC summons, the Spirit of Advocacy isn’t very good, at least not until you upgrade it.
How to upgrade the Spirit of Advocacy
You’ve got a few options for enhancing the Spirit of Advocacy. The easiest is using more Lacrima of Circulation. While you’re in the Crevice, your base, speak with Daphrona and spend Lacrima of Circulation to upgrade the Spirit. The downside to this approach is that you’ll need to farm even more of that item to summon the Spirit. It’s doable, but it’s a bit of a grind.
Some items Khazan can equip may also increase the Spirit of Advocacy’s power, but the most important one is Veronika the Advocate. Veronika is an equippable phantom you can summon after finding her ghost gems in the Forgotten Temple. There are other phantoms, but Veronika is the only one who increases the Spirit of Advocacy’s damage, initially by four percent but eventually up to 18 percent.
