Monster Hunter Wilds offers a wide range of weapons to choose from and experiment with, and there’s literally nothing stopping you from switching weapon types whenever you please. That said, when you do eventually find one or two favourite weapons that you wish to utilise to the fullest, you want to make sure to upgrade them.
Upgrading weapons works a little differently to upgrading armor in Monster Hunter Wilds. Though, upgrading your arsenal of weapons is arguably a little more straight-forward than the latter. To help you ensure you’re making the most of your shiny blades or brutal bowgun, here’s exactly how to upgrade weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to upgrade weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds
As mentioned, upgrading weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds works a little differently to upgrading your armor. If anything, it’s a lot more straight-forward to do. First things first, pay a visit to the Smithy at any of your Base Camps around the map.
At the Smithy, choose to ‘Forge/Upgrade Weapon’ and then select the weapon you wish to upgrade.
You will then be presented with a range of weapon trees for that particular weapon type. Along the left-hand side, you’ll see the multiple different weapon trees for the weapon listed. As you go about forging weapons from a specific weapon tree, more weapons — with better stats — will become available for you to forge. These are your upgrades, so to speak.
For example, the below screenshot displays the various weapon trees for the bow. In the Ore Tree specifically, you can see that I own the first bow from that tree, and the second bow from that tree is available for me to forge. This is my weapon upgrade!
Simply put, select a weapon you like the look of, then select a weapon tree for it that you like, and proceed with forging the weapons from that weapon tree one by one. Your weapons stats and capabilities will slowly improve as you do so, but you will need to be prepared to hand over your monster materials, ores, and money to the Smithy to forge these new weapons.
You’ll notice that some weapon trees tie to others, too. For example, looking at the above screenshot, players must forge the first Quematrice Bow to be able to access the Hirabami weapon tree. Similarly, they must forge the second Quematrice Bow to access the Xu Wu weapon tree and so forth.
Do not have the required equipment for weapon upgrades in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Some upgrades will appear in the weapon tree in Monster Hunter Wilds but may be unavailable. If you can see the materials needed for a weapon but cannot forge it, you may need to forge the prior weapon in that tree first, or may be missing necessary materials.
If the materials for the weapon are appearing as question marks, it means you haven’t yet discovered the source of the materials for that weapon just yet. Keep accepting quests and assignments, and hunting monsters, until you do!
