Xavier is the first love interest you encounter in Love and Deepspace, and while some gacha games go out of their way to try to tempt you away from the starter characters as soon as someone shinier comes along, that’s not the case here. Thanks to LaDS’ unusual system of having you wish for Memories of a comparatively small roster of characters instead of regularly introducing brand-new ones, it’s perfectly viable to stick with Xavier as your partner both in battle and romance for the long-term if you find you prefer him.
While the heroine has technically known a couple of the other love interests for longer, the player will surely come away with an impression of Xavier as their initial companion in LaDS: not only is he your partner throughout the tutorials, but a lot of the early-game story battles favour his combat strengths. But Xavier is anything but basic, as his complex backstory eventually reveals. To help you keep track of what’s going on, we’ve come up with this overview of everything we know about Xavier’s lore and backstory in Love and Deepspace.

Who is Xavier in Love and Deepspace?
In the present-day of the game, Xavier is the player’s co-worker and later partner at the UNICORN Hunter Association, a quasi-military agency of Deepspace Hunters who protect Linkon City from the threat of interstellar Wanderers. He’s also our heroine’s upstairs neighbour, although she only becomes aware of this after knowing him for a while.
Xavier is perhaps the most overtly sweet-natured of all the love interests: despite his serious demeanour, it doesn’t take long for it to become apparent that he’s kind and gentle almost to a fault, as well as someone who feels deeply connected to the natural world and longs to protect all living creatures from harm. However, outside of his exceptional abilities as a Deepspace Hunter, he’s fairly clueless when it comes to day-to-day practicalities; for instance, while he longs to be a competent cook, the heroine often ends up called upon to rescue him from his own disastrous culinary efforts.
When he’s not dispatching Wanderers with his light sword or narrowly avoiding starting a kitchen fire, Xavier is shown to be a voracious reader with a particular love for comic books. He’s also very fond of naps, becoming easily exhausted and often nodding off after battles, and also generally favouring a nice late lie-in on his days off.
How to unlock Xavier in Love and Deepspace
Xavier is the first love interest introduced in Love and Deepspace: you’ll meet him very early on in the game, and he’ll be your default companion through the tutorials. You’ll even receive one of his Memories for free without having to interact with the gacha, just to get you started and teach you how levelling works.
However, unlike many starter characters in gacha games, Xavier is just as viable a fighter as any of the others, and many players choose to main him in the long-term. In fact, Version 1.0’s final boss favours Xavier’s Stellactrum strengths the most, so it pays to have him built as a secondary companion even if you’re maining someone else.
Xavier’s lore and backstory explained (SPOILERS!)
Xavier’s history reveals that he’s been involved in the affairs of Linkon City and the life of the heroine for much longer than seems plausible, given that his stated age is only 23. In fact, Xavier is much older than he appears, thanks to hailing from the planet Philos – a post-Earth human colony where lifespans have been extended significantly.
It was there, hundreds of years into the future of this timeline, that he met an incarnation of the heroine who was then a knight-in-training protecting the population from Wanderers, mirroring her present-day career as a Deepspace Hunter. As the crown prince of the Philosian people, Xavier was shocked to discover that the heroine’s perpetual cycle of sacrifice and rebirth was considered essential to sustaining the planet’s wellbeing, and chose instead to reverse their roles, abdicating the throne and nominating her as Queen in his stead, while he became a knight in her service, becoming leader of the “Backtrackers”.
During an expedition to revisit Earth and assess the viability of the people of Philos returning to their original home planet, the Backtrackers’ ship was caught in the Deepspace Tunnel, and they were accidentally transported back to Linkon City close to the present time. Xavier and his crew have been stranded on the Earth for decades by the time the story starts, forced to create and then discard identities every few years as their impeded ageing becomes apparent. While their nominal aim is still to repair their ship and return home, over time several members of the crew have chosen to break ties with the Backtrackers, often marrying humans and beginning ordinary lives; while others have succumbed to the same unknown contamination that turns humans into Wanderers, forcing Xavier to dispatch them.
While Xavier has had many identities over the years, he has consistently maintained his alter-ego as “Lumiere”, a semi-mythical figure in Linkon City who played a crucial part in resolving the Chronorift Catastrophe that saw Wanderers first emerge on Earth. However, he successfully keeps Lumiere separate from his everyday life, to the extent that even the heroine remains uncertain as to whether they’re one and the same.
At the time he meets the protagonist in the present-day of the story, Xavier is strongly hinted to be closing in on the end of his augmented lifespan. Realising that he’s unlikely ever to return home, he understands that the heroine isn’t the same person he knows as the Queen of Philos, but is once again drawn to an incarnation of her.
Unlike the other love interests, Xavier has never actually confessed his feelings or been in a relationship with any version of the heroine before. As such, his rare displays of insecurity are almost always expressions of jealousy when she pays attention to someone else while they’re dating. However, since LaDS’ love interests only very rarely even acknowledge each other in canon and basically never interact, the in-story instances of this behaviour are kept fairly lighthearted: the brief targets of his green-eyed monster include a small child and his own alter ego.
