Ubisoft’s The Division series celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and the franchise has multiple games in the works right now, including The Division 3. The game was announced with little fanfare back in 2023, but more details have emerged since then. In this post, we’re rounding up everything we know about the next entry in Ubisoft’s popular online shooter series.
When will The Division 3 be released?
Ubisoft has not announced a release date for The Division, or even a year. This information should come into focus in due course, but it remains to be seen when that could happen.
Ubisoft announced The Division 3 back in 2023. At the time, the company said it was “actively building a team” for the game, suggesting the announcement might have been more of an effort to recruit staff. Companies are known to announce games early on with little detail in an effort to encourage people to come work for the company.
Who is making The Division 3?
The Division 3’s development is being led by Massive Entertainment, the same team that made The Division and The Division 2. The company also made Star Wars: Outlaws.
Ubisoft is known to build its big games across its network of studios, and that’s also expected to be the case for The Division 3. The wording in the announcement that The Division 3’s development will be “led by” Massive also alludes to this.
Julian Gerighty, who co-directed The Division and The Division 2, is now an executive producer for the entire series at Ubisoft. His mandate is to drive The Division franchise in a “unified direction” across multiple games, including The Division 3 and the mobile game The Division Resurgence. He was also overseeing the development of the free-to-play game The Division: Heartland, but it was canceled.
A “monster”
During the New Game+ Showcase recently, Gerighty said The Division 3 is “shaping up to be a monster.” He added that he believes The Division 3 will have “as big an impact” as The Division 1. He didn’t elaborate any further, and it’s natural that he would make bold claims lacking substance or depth to drive hype.

The Division 3 story, setting, and characters
Ubisoft has not shared any details on The Division 3’s story, setting, and characters as of yet. The first game takes place in New York City in the near future after a pandemic. Players work together to try to rebuild the city and discover secrets about the virus. The Division 2 took the action to Washington, D.C., but there is no word yet on the setting for The Division 3.
The Division movie
Years ago, Ubisoft announced it was making a movie based on The Division, but it’s been years since we’ve heard anything about the project. This isn’t uncommon in Hollywood, as projects often take a long time to materialize. A full ten years ago, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain were in the mix for starring roles. John Wick’s David Leitch was circling to direct at one point, but newer rumors said Skyscraper director Rawson Marshall Thurber was taking over.
