Battlefield 2042 Is Removing 128-Player Breakthrough Mode In Update 4.1 Tomorrow

Releasing tomorrow is update 4.1 for Battlefield 2042 and it is officially removing the 128-player Breakthrough mode, but it’s only for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC currently.

The removal of the 128-player version of Breakthrough was due to EA and DICE thinking that the scale of players is “better suited for Conquest where gameplay spaces are larger” and sandbox-y. Moreover, the developers believe that the “impact of an individual player [or] squad” diminishes due, in part, to the intense gunfighting across the map and the enormous amount of players. From now on, they will be putting their efforts into the 64-player version of Breakthrough, limiting the chaos of combat so teams can coordinate better and plan their attacks.

As EA puts it: “the move to 64 players will bring back the pacing that helps celebrate these moments of teamwork and PTFOing, and [they] will be keeping a close eye on how [their] changes help to improve the experience ahead of the start of Season 1.” In the case of the console and PC versions that had their 128-player Breakthrough mode cut, there will now be “set map sizes” for specific zones such as Hourglass, Breakaway, and Renewal for the 64-player version.

Coming with the mode change are little improvements here and there. Stock weapons will have better base recoil, but to compensate they will have reduced recoil benefits from attachments. Then there’s the nerf to Boris’ SG-36 Sentry Gun, squashing its overall power. And the Angel can no longer provide Armor Plates via his Supply Bag.

What’s your opinion on them taking away 128-player Breakthrough? Let’s talk about it below! You can read up on the list of updates coming on the EA website for Battlefield 2042.
