DOOM: The Dark Ages’ Abyssal Forest chapter is much shorter compared to The Siege – which is a chapter in two parts that sees you slaying demons across the battlefield and beyond. The Abyssal Forest takes a slightly darker turn, however, acting as one of your first run-ins with witches, who are a particularly annoying enemy!
The good news is that Abyssal Forest is home to a new weapon and plenty of secrets, and some Rubies for upgrading your arsenal of weapons. Without further ado, here’s our DOOM: The Dark Ages Abyssal Forest walkthrough.
DOOM The Dark Ages Abyssal Forest walkthrough
During the Abyssal Forest chapter in DOOM: The Dark Ages, you’ll want to look out for the following secrets, collectibles, and items:
- 11 Secrets
- 1 Codex Entry
- 1 Toy
- 1 Demonic Essence Upgrade (Armor)
- 2 Rubies
As we keep reminding you of during this DOOM: The Dark Ages walkthrough, make sure to use the map often! If you’re near an undiscovered collectible item or secret, it will appear on your map. Similarly, you can check the list on the right-hand side of the map to keep track of just how many collectibles and secrets you have found, and how many you’ve left to seek out!
It’s incredibly useful when it comes to making sure you don’t miss any secrets, so be sure to scour the map before going past the point of no return!
Secret #1
When you first enter the Abyssal Forest, advance forward a little and look at your map. Specifically look for where the path into the forest splits (shown below). Take a right and at the top of the hill, where there are some soldiers, jump over to the platform opposite. You’ll soon come to our first secret location, which contains a Life Sigil.
You’ll also see the Yellow Key below you on the map here, which we’ll go grab next!
Yellow Key
Go ahead and deal with the first red enemy encounter just up ahead next. Once that’s dealt with, you want to go through the small path north of the area, marked on the below map. You’ll arrive at the Yellow Key! Collect it and head outside, where another enemy encounter will begin.
Secret #2
Afterwards, go through the locked gate from earlier that requires the Yellow Key. In the following section, there’s a path leading underground – on your left – that is easily missed. We’ve marked it on the map below.
Down here, you’ll collect some Gold, a Ruby, and our second secret location. Shield Throw at the Hot Metal at the end of the passage to find yourself just passed the gate (the one we used the Yellow Key to unlock) again.
Secret #3 and Collectible #1
If you open your map, you should spy a Codex entry just up ahead. It’s surrounded by tree roots that you need to Shield Bash through.
Secret #4
Continue following your quest marker, using the green Flesh Node to platform across the bridge just up ahead. After climbing up the wall, keep right and jump down, then U-turn.
Just up ahead here, through more tree roots that need Shield Bashing, you’ll find a Gold Chest and our fourth secret location (shown below).
Follow your quest marker again. You’ll soon come to a Sentinel Shrine, and there’ll be an enemy encounter up ahead.
Demonic Essence Upgrade (Armor)
Defeat the Pinky Rider in the upcoming encounter to receive the Demonic Essence Upgrade (Armor) upgrade for this chapter.
Secret #5
After dealing with the above enemy encounter, let’s grab our fifth and sixth secret locations before continuing with the quest.
From the Sentinel Shrine, go straight ahead and keep left; you’ll eventually come to a ledge that you can jump off to a below platform (drawn on the below map).
Follow the path to come to a room with a cage containing a collectible and multiple flamethrowers. To be able to access the collectible inside the cage, stand behind the contraption and look for some Hot Metal to Shield Throw at.
To the left of the Hot Metal, there’ll also be an Energy Node to Shield Throw at. Once that’s done, you can collect the Toy Witch and Shield Bash your way out of here.
Secret #6
After exiting the below area, look to your left. You should see a climbable crate in the distance, shown below.
Get a little closer and look to the left of it; you should spy some Hot Metal behind a moving vent. Time your Shield Throw and destroy the metal, which then drops the crate.
Leave this particular crate alone for now. Instead, from where you shot the Hot Metal, look to your right. There should be another crate here ready for us to climb.
Climb up it, and platform to your right to reach the eight secret area and a Life Sigil.
Secret #7
Now, return to the crate you just dropped and climb up it. Before interacting with the turret here, look to your left. You should see some platforms with Gold Bars on them. Jump across them.
There’ll be a wall to jump to and climb up, and atop it, you’ll unlock our seventh secret location and be able to grab a Ruby.
Secret #8
Return to the top of the watchtower and interact with the turret, using it to blast the blocked off gate ahead of us. Don’t go anywhere just yet, though, as we’ve more secrets to uncover in this area before continuing.
From the turret, make your way back towards the Sentinel Shrine but don’t climb the wall leading up to it (a route is drawn on the above map). Instead, face away from the Shrine and keep to your right, following the path here. At the end of the path, you will see some Hot Metal to shoot (shown below).
Shooting this metal causes it to crash down and create an opening in the ground below it. Dive in, collecting our eighth secret location. Clear the enemies, continue along the path, and you’ll soon find yourself in the interior of the watchtower. Here, you will find a Gold Chest.
The gate for the watchtower interior is open now, so exit and head left around the back of the building.
Secret #9
If you go around the back of the watchtower, you can jump down to a platform with some Gold Bars on it (shown below).
Look at the watchtower walls here and you will also see some Hot Metal to Shield Throw at (pictured below), opening the gate beside you.
Head inside to collect our ninth secret area and grab some Gold. You can now finally go through the blocked off gate (now unblocked) that we fired the turret at earlier and past the point of no return.
Secret #10
After jumping down past the point of no return, an enemy encounter begins. Quickly U-turn to see some Gold Bars behind you; grabbing them will unlock the tenth secret area for this chapter.
Finish the encounter and continue following your quest marker.
Secret #11
At the bottom of the elevator, you’ll receive the Grenade Launcher! Deal with the upcoming enemies and keep your eyes peeled for a green Flesh Node. One will be up to your left as soon as you step outside (shown below).
Use the Flesh Node to reach a hidden path and run along it, being careful of some gaps that will drop you back to where you started. Upon reaching the end of this passage, you’ll unlock our eleventh and final secret for this chapter, and there’ll be a Gold Chest to crack open.
You can now go past the point of no return and finish this level, which involves a very fun enemy encounter with the Aggadon Champion.
