DOOM: The Dark Ages first chapter, The Village of Khalim, largely acts as a tutorial. It introduces you to the game’s mechanics, some new weapons, and has the first of many secret locations and collectibles for you to find while ripping and tearing through foes.
In this DOOM: The Dark Ages walkthrough, we explain where you’ll find every secret and collectible – which includes toys and weapon skins – in Chapter 1, The Village of Khalim.
DOOM The Dark Ages Village of Khalim walkthrough
Throughout The Village of Khalim chapter in DOOM: The Dark Ages, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for the following:
- 6 Secrets
- 2 Codex Entries (Collectible)
- 2 Toys (Collectible)
- 1 Weapon Skin (Collectible)
It’s also worth noting that secrets and collectibles aren’t necessarily in the same spot! You might discover a Codex that isn’t in a secret location, for example, or you may find a secret location that contains a Gold Crate rather than any collectibles. Bear this in mind, and remember you can open your map and look at the right-hand side of your screen to check your collectibles and secrets progress at any time!
Housekeeping out of the way. Let’s go, Slayer!
Secret #1
The very first secret location in DOOM’s Village of Khalim is near the beginning of the level. In the area that is just beyond where you receive the Power Gauntlet, complete the tutorial and go through the archway into the next area.
On the left-hand side here, there’s a barred up door with a purple sigil on it. Shield Bash this to discover your first secret location, and there’ll be a Life Sigil up ahead.
Secret #2 and Collectible #1
Head to the next enemy encounter, and once it’s over, your objective will change and you will be tasked with retrieving the Blue Keycard so that you can continue the level. Follow your quest objective to collect the Blue Keycard, and prepare to defeat a Pinky Rider along the way.
Once you have collected the Blue Keycard from the church, don’t use it right away.
In the area where you will have learned how to parry attacks (which is where the large gate in need of the Blue Keycard is located), go south towards the small toy figurine icon on your map (shown above).
You can use the Blue Keycard on the gate here to retrieve the Toy Imp!
Secret #3, Secret #4 and Collectible #2
Use the Blue Keycard to continue progressing through the level – destroying the first Demonic Portal – where you will also discover the below Secret Gate, which requires a Secret Key to access.
To grab this, face the locked gate and open your map. There will be three more Demonic Portals marked on your map. You want to visit the one that is to your left, furthest to the east; there’ll be an Arsenal drop here that we can collect a new weapon from. You will have to run past one other Demonic Portal and handle an enemy encounter along the way, however.
After destroying the Demonic Portal there, look at your map and the Secret Key should be marked on it now, just up a hill to the left of the Portal you just destroyed (shown below).
After grabbing the Secret Key, wait! Return back to where you collected the Arsenal drop, and if you look at your map, you should see the icon for a Toy Soldier Collectible beneath you.
Jump down off the edge of the area and follow the path (shown above) to retrieve it. That’s our third secret and our second collectible retrieved!
For our fourth secret, you can return to the central area – where the first Demonic Portal was – and unlock the Secret Gate to retrieve another Life Sigil.
Secret #5 and Collectible #3
Return back to the above Arsenal drop (by the second Demonic Portal we destroyed), and while facing the Arsenal pod, U-turn and look across the water to see a cave (shown below).
You can sprint and jump to this cave, where you’ll need to unlock the fifth secret location, deal with a brief enemy encounter, and retrieve our third collectible, a Weapon Skin.
Go and destroy the nearest Demonic Portal now. This is the one we will have run past earlier. Once that’s done, make your way to the fourth and final Demonic Portal.
Collectible #4
After destroying the fourth Demonic Portal, look at your map to see a nearby Codex. Go right of the portal and climb the wall here to reach it. You can now follow the quest objective again.
Secret #6 and Collectible #5
Once all Demonic Portals are closed, you will follow your quest objective to an enemy encounter with a large Titan.
After this encounter, proceed towards the next and final quest objective (the point of no return!), but look out for one more Codex on your map before leaving (shown above). This is accessible by climbing a wall between both objectives, and it is the final secret and collectible!
