Genshin Impact Traces of Chroma quest guide
The Genshin Impact Traces of Chroma quest takes you into the heart of a family dispute and more than one deceptive scheme. You also get to play around with a bit of vandalism because what’s a summer vacation without it?
Below, we walk you through each step of Genshin Impact’s Traces of Chroma quest, including how to investigate the cavern. Note that this quest includes a fairly detailed depiction of someone suffering from dementia and memory loss, so if that’s an issue for you, you might want to skip reading the journal entries near the end and just follow the quest steps here.
How to start Traces of Chroma in Genshin Impact
Traces of Chroma starts in a slightly unusual way. Head to the point shown above in the Easybreeze Market after arriving in Tenochtitlan Harbor, and you’ll see a man without a name musing on the unpainted wall before him. Take on the form of an Asha, and paint the wall to get things started.
The man, Cozatl, is impressed by the artistry of your vandalism and asks you for a favor – assisting a local artist in his bid to win the contract for an upcoming project.
Traces of Chroma: Give the cafe some color

Your first task is painting the nearby cafe, owned by the artist’s adopted sister. You need to paint the walls yellow and the canopies and umbrellas whatever color you want. It’s fine if you splat the wrong color, though, as you can just paint over it without penalty.
We recommend using the Asha’s jump skill to get a better view while painting. They stay suspended in midair while you’re aiming the paint shot, and the perspective makes it easier to see little corners and obscure spots you might have missed. You can ignore the balloons if you want to. A cutscene plays once you’re finished, and the next part of the quest opens at 8 a.m. the next day (in-game time).
Traces of Chroma: Complete the design commission

The next commission is a two-part thing, and it might seem a little confusing based on how you’re positioned at the start and which dialogue lines play. You need to decorate the music store in yellow or orange – orange is unavailable until you complete a different world quest – and then, to the left of where you started, paint three items as the customer requests.
- Blue surfboard
- Red ball
- Yellow ring
Traces of Chroma: Investigate the cavern and announce the results

Travel to the point shown on the map above, and a cutscene will play. Investigate the three marked points after it ends, speak with Cozatl, and read the journal entries he hands over. Then it’s time for some deduction. A series of thought bubbles pops up, and your task is to unpack these thoughts, then decide on which ones to present as correct conclusions.
There are wrong choices, but no consequences for picking them. You just get sent back to the thought screen.
The correct conclusions are:
- The relationship between Zolton and colors
- The source of emotions and memories
- Missing memories
- The origins of Chroma
Traces of Chroma: Give the studio some color
The final task takes place two in-game days later, and it’s another paint job. You get to decorate the market’s art studio however you see fit, now with the newly unlocked purple added to your palette as well. Once you’ve covered it as you like it, speak to Zolin to end the quest. Your rewards are:
- 1 Easybreeze badge
- 4 hero’s wit
- 40 primogems
- 35,000 mora
- 3 mystic enhancement ore
If you’re using the event’s rewards – and Genshin Impact codes – on 5.8’s banners and end up with this version’s new 5-star, head over to our Ineffa build for some help getting her ready for action.
