Hogwarts Legacy Expansion And Definitive Edition Canceled, Sequel Still In The Works – Report

0

Despite massive success, a new report states 2023’s Hogwarts Legacy won’t receive an expansion or a Definitive Edition re-release originally planned for later this year. Neither of these projects had been officially announced.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who previously reported on the existence of a planned Definitive Edition and expansion for Hogwarts Legacy, states Warner Bros. Discovery is canceling both as part of the ongoing reorganization of its video game division. The expansion would have introduced new storylines to the popular open-world Harry Potter RPG, with the Definitive Edition slated to bundle together the base game, expansion, and other DLC content.

The cancellation comes out of Warner Bros’. concern that the amount of content planned for the expansion wasn’t enough to justify its asking price, according to Bloomberg’s sources. Despite the cancellation of the expansion, Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software is still reported to be working on a sequel.

Warner Bros. recently announced big changes to its game division, canceling a Wonder Woman game and shutting down multiple studios, including Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith. In a statement, Warner Bros. said in the future it would seek to focus on games based on four established IP: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC.

Despite controversy surrounding Harry Potter author J.K Rowling’s anti-transgender views, Hogwarts Legacy was still the best-selling game of 2023 in the US, beating out titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Warner Bros. has called a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy one of its “biggest priorities.” Another Harry Potter title, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, released last year.
