Honkai Star Rail Mydei build and teams

0

Putting together the right Honkai Star Rail Mydei build is important, more so than with other characters, as this Imaginary Destruction beast is needy – but powerful. Mydei’s stat needs are steep, and his Light Cone options seem underwhelming at a glance. However, with a good stat balance, you can get a lot of your Mydei without having to opt for a premium setup.

Our Honkai Star Rail Mydei build breaks down his best Light Cones and Relics and offers some Mydei team recommendations as well.

Honkai Star Rail Mydei build

  • Needs a lot of HP, ideally 8,000 but definitely over 5,000
  • Overpowered signature Cone, but good free options as well
  • Wants the Erudition Relic set and Bone Ornaments
  • A reliable sustain is essential on Mydei teams

Honkai Star Rail Mydei Light Cones

Mydei’s signature Light Cone is Flame of Blood, Blaze My Path, and it’s a bit ridiculously overtuned for him. It increases the wearer’s max HP by 18 percent and incoming healing by 20 percent. When the equipping character uses their skill or ultimate, the Cone consumes six percent of their max HP and raises the move’s damage by 30 percent. If the HP consumed is over 500, the damage buff increases by an additional 30 percent. Mydei’s skill and ultimate power up when he loses HP, and his damage scales on max HP.

The trap with this Light Cone, though, is the second 30 percent damage buff. Getting that without increasing the Light Cone’s superimposition level is nearly impossible, as even at 8,000 HP – Mydei’s ideal max HP – it’d only consume 480 HP. Don’t aim for that unless you’ve already got a ton of Jade saved up, as it’s not worth it and certainly not worth spending real money for.

Blade’s Light Cone, The Unreachable Side, is a strong alternative if you have it. It increases the wearer’s crit rate by 18 percent, which is helpful if you’re struggling to push Mydei’s HP toward that 8,000 max point, and raises their HP by 18 percent. When the wearer consumes their own HP, which Mydei always does, their next attack’s damage increases by 24 percent. The best part about this buff is that it resets after the user’s attack – not after the next turn. If Mydei acts multiple times in a turn, he’ll still get these benefits.

Mydei’s kit doesn’t scale with attack, and break effect is pointless for him. That means his 4-star options are a little more limited, but you do have two free choices that work quite well. The first is from Herta’s store, Ninja Record: Sound Hunt. It raises the wearer’s HP by 12/24 percent and, when the user consumes their own HP, increases their crit damage by 18.36 percent for two turns. Getting this one to max superimposition will take some time, since it costs Herta money, but it’s doable for free.

The second good 4-star option is Flames Afar, which you can get from the Forgotten Hall or Pure Fiction store. When the wearer consumes more than 25 percent of their HP in one go – Mydei’s skill consumes 50 percent – they’re instantly healed for 15 percent of their max HP and deal 25/50 percent more damage for two turns. The downside is that this effect only activates once every few turns. Since it’s free, though, you’ll get the 50 percent damage buff quickly, and that applies to any damage Mydei deals.

Speaking of general damage buffs, Arlan’s Light Cone, A Secret Vow, finally has a good use case with Mydei. It increases the wearer’s damage by 20 percent and then lets them deal an extra 20 percent damage to enemies whose HP is at an equal or higher percentage than the wearer’s HP. For example, if Mydei has 75 percent of his max HP and attacks an enemy with 90 percent of their max HP intact, he’ll deal the extra damage – even if Mydei’s HP is at 7,000, since the buff is concerned with percentages, not exact numbers. This one only shows up at random in banners, though.

A solid 3-star choice is Mutual Demise while you’re working on Mydei’s HP, since it buffs their crit rate by 12/24 percent, or you could opt for Collapsing Sky. It increases the user’s basic attack and skill damage by 20/40 percent, and even though Mydei’s basic doesn’t do much, his skill damage is immense.

Honkai Star Rail Mydei Relics

Mydei’s best Relics depend heavily on your substats and where you’re at while building him. In the early stages, when you’re trying to get his HP as high as possible, Longevous Disciple is one of your best choices.

  • Two-piece effect: Increases HP by 12 percent
  • Four-piece effect: When the wearer takes damage or consumes their own HP, their crit rate increases by eight percent for two turns. This effect can stack twice

The Mydei meta insists that he doesn’t need crit rate, but that’s only true if his HP is at 8,000, for reasons we’ll get into shortly. If his HP isn’t that high, getting some extra crit rate from his Relics really isn’t a bad idea.

Another useful set is Scholar Lost in Erudition.

  • Two-piece effect: Increases crit rate by eight percent
  • Four-piece effect: Increases skill and ultimate damage by 20 percent. After the wearer uses their ultimate, their skill’s next use deals an additional 25 percent more damage

You could also mix and match, for example, two pieces of Longevous Disciple with two of Wastelander of Banditry Desert, the latter of which increases imaginary damage by 10 percent.

Honkai Star Rail Mydei Ornaments

The Bone Collector’s Serene Demesne is ostensibly meant for Castorice, but it’ll do well for Mydei, too. It increases the wearer’s HP by 12 percent, and when their HP is 5,000 or higher, they get a 28 percent crit damage buff. Their memosprite does as well, but that’s not applicable for Mydei.

An alternative is Fleet of the Ageless, which increases HP by 12 percent and gives the rest of the party a slight attack buff, too. That’s less important if Mydei is your primary damage dealer, but if you’re using a sub-DPS as well, it’s a welcome little boost.

You can also use Rutilant Arena. It provides an eight percent crit rate buff, and when his crit rate is 70 percent or higher, he’ll deal 20 percent more damage with his skill and basic attack.

Honkai Star Rail Mydei stats

Mydei needs a lot of HP, both to stay alive when his skills sap his HP and to power them up. You need 5,000 if you’re aiming to use the Bone Collector’s set, and 8,000 if you want the maximum return from his third major passive trace. It raises Mydei’s crit rate by 1.2 percent for every 100 HP in excess of 4,000, up to an additional 4,000 HP, and the total buff that provides is about 48 percent extra crit rate.

It’s a massive number to aim for, though, hence us recommending other pieces that increase crit rate in case you can’t or don’t want to try for 8,000 HP. Aside from that, you’ll want to buff his crit damage as well, since his kit has no options for increasing that stat.

  • Head: HP
  • Hands: Attack
  • Body: Crit damage
  • Feet: HP percent or speed
  • Orb: HP percent or Imaginary damage
  • Rope: HP percent

HP and crit damage would be your ideal substats.

Given how self-destructive Mydei is, he definitely needs a reliable healer. Natasha is running in his first banner, though her healing frequency makes it tough to keep him alive. Pretty much any other healer is useful, though, with Gallagher and Huohuo being two of the best picks. You’ll also want someone who can support Mydei with damage buffs, either general damage or crit damage.

One possible team is:

Tribbie is a popular choice as well, thanks to her Res Pen and damage buffs, and you could also use Ruan Mei for the same thing. She’s a little less useful, though, since she doesn’t attack like Tribbie, and her skill’s break effect buff do little for Mydei.

Mydei’s F2P team looks something like this:

  • Mydei
  • Remembrance Trailblazer
  • Lynx
  • Pela

Pela might not get much attention anymore, but her defense shredding skills are still potent and make her an excellent support attacker for any strong DPS character. Remembrance Trailblazer gives Mydei some much-needed crit damage increases and can advance his actions forward as well.

What tier is Mydei in Honkai Star Rail?

Mydei certainly isn’t an easy character to use, in any way. His high stat demands are grueling, his best teammates are premium characters from recent banners, and his signature Light Cone is overtuned to the point that it makes other options seem less useful. That said, in the right circumstances, his damage output is absurdly high. In his trial, with Bronya and Tribbie, his ultimate dealt over 1 million damage. Your results will vary depending on your build, but the potential for him being an exceptionally powerful character is high.

TL;DR, we’d put him at the low end of the S-tier. He’s too strong for the A-tier, but too difficult to easily recommend.
