Fields of Mistria’s auto-petters are a new convenience that developer NPC Studio added in the farm sim’s second major update. These automatically make all your farm critters happy–assuming they’re in the same room as the statue. That sounds like a small benefit, but once you have a lot of animals, petting them individually can take a lot of time from your day. Fields of Mistria: How to get the Animal Sprite Statue auto-petter crafting recipe
Your first auto-petter and the crafting recipe to make more are sealed away in a cave you’ve probably passed countless times before. It’s the blocked cavern entrance next to Errol’s house in The Narrows, southwest of the museum. You need a new spell, Dragon’s Breath, to open it, and getting that is no easy task.
Fields of Mistria rewards you with the Dragon’s Breath spell as part of completing the Breaking the Fire Seal quest, which you also need to complete to meet Caldarus’ human form, enter the Lava Caves and Deep Woods biomes, and unlock Water Sprite Statue sprinklers.
Breaking the Fire Seal unlocks once you pass through the other seals in the mine and reach floor 60, which isn’t something you’ll do quickly. Convenient as the idea of an auto-petter might sound, it’s best to let this process unfold naturally, rather than grinding through most of Fields of Mistria just to get this specific item.
With the spell in hand, so to speak, travel to the cave next to Errol’s house and unleash your flaming fumes onto the rocks. They’ll crumble, so you can go inside and retrieve your first auto-petter and the Animal Sprite Statue crafting recipe from the chest there.
Fields of Mistria: How to craft the auto-petter
Like with the sprinkler recipe, crafting the auto-petter requires a new stone ingredient that unlocks at the end of another questline. This one is the Stone Refinery, which is tied to the Renovate the Inn quest that becomes available near the end of the current Fields of Mistria storyline and once you reach renown rank 55.
At the end of all this, you can craft your own stone refinery, which lets you make refined stone and essence stones, the latter of which you need to power automated tools.
To craft one auto-petter, you need:
- 10 refined stone
- 50 essence
- 3 shiny beads
Shiny beads drop from animals when you feed them after you unlock the Currency of Care skill under the Ranching perk tree. Upgrading the skill gives you a chance of acquiring an extra shiny bead in the morning when you collect an animal’s produce.
Place an essence stone in the Animal Sprite Statue to power it–and remember to check back every day or so to see if it needs a new one, as the smaller essence stones run out of juice quickly. The auto-petter will play a melody that soothes every animal in the same barn with the statue, which the game treats as you petting that animal for the day.
