Oblivion Remastered Best Custom Class Guide
Oblivion Remastered is a whole new way to explore the world of Tamriel, but some things about the classic adventure haven’t changed. The best way to play is still to create your own Custom Class at the beginning of the game to fine-tune the Skills and Attributes that best suit your character.
Here’s how to create the best Custom Class for different character archetypes in Oblivion Remastered, as well as what’s different from the original game.
Why to make a Custom Class in Oblivion Remastered
Creating a Custom Class in Oblivion allows you to do two main things:
- Select your Major Attributes
- Select your Major Skills
In the original Oblivion, the Level Up system was quite broken. In short, there was a minimum threshold of how many Skills you had to advance before you could level up, but doing so straight away wouldn’t give you the maximum possible Attribute points. So, to make the most of each Level, you were supposed to leave it as long as possible before powering up your character. This led to a situation where you could be massively underpowered compared to enemies of the same Level if you rushed through.
However, in Oblivion Remastered this isn’t the case. Apparently taking inspiration from both the Level Up systems of Oblivion and Skyrim, in Oblivion Remastered you can now actively choose the best Major Attributes and Skills for your character without worrying about them being underpowered if you Level Up “wrong”.
Every player is different, but that’s exactly why you should make a Custom Class, since it gives you the best start with your most used and most useful Skills.

How to make the best Melee Custom Class in Oblivion Remastered
Melee Custom Classes are the simplest to make because you basically just need to choose the weapon type you want to use (Blade or Blunt), the armor type you prefer (Light or Heavy), then a slew of quality-of-life Skills that increase your survivability or make the game more fun to play (Restoration, Security, etc).
Restoration is great in general, because even though you don’t have much Magicka you will still want to use healing spells constantly to replenish your HP.
Regardless of the character archetype you want to play, Sneak is always a great choice because it is massively overpowered. It’s better at a distance, but its massive damage modifier for undetected attacks will always be useful.
Another interesting way to play is with Hand-to-Hand. While it’s easy to discount, if you get the Bands of Kwang Lao mentioned in our best weapons page (they’re accessible immediately after you leave the Sewers), then it’s a lot of fun – particularly if you’ve played as a swordsman before.
A popular hybrid build is a mixture of melee and magic, a Spellblade, Battlemage, whatever you want to call it. This is very similar to a regular melee warrior, except you throw in Destruction magic for good measure. This is what the different Custom Classes should look like:
Warrior Custom Class
Major Attributes:
Major Skills:
- Blade, Blunt or Hand-to-Hand
- Heavy or Light Armor
- Block (or Athletics if you’d prefer to dodge)
- Restoration
- Athletics
- Sneak
- Security
Battlemage Custom Class
Major Attributes:
Major Skills:
- Blade or Blunt
- Heavy or Light Armor
- Athletics
- Destruction
- Restoration
- Sneak
- Security
How to make the best Magic Custom Class in Oblivion Remastered
A Magicka-based Custom Class in Oblivion Remastered depends completely on your Birthsign.
If you choose the Atronach Birthsign, then you don’t want to choose Willpower as a Major Attribute because you literally cannot regenerate MP due to Stunted Magicka.
Other than that, the Classes are basically the same. Destruction is a shoe-in as your main way of dealing damage, while Restoration will be perennially useful for replenishing your health.
Conjuration allows you to summon monsters and familiars to aid you in battle, which is very useful for drawing aggro away from your squishy body. Then the Absorb spells from the Mysticism are particularly helpful for Atronachs who can’t replenish their own Magicka.
Finally, if you’re not confident in your aim and think you might need something to fall back on, you can always throw in a melee Skill instead of one of the schools of magic.
With all that in mind, the Custom Classes should look something like this:
Atronach Custom Class
Major Attributes:
Major Skills:
- Destruction
- Restoration
- Conjuration
- Mysticism
- Light Armor
- Sneak
- Security
Apprentice/Mage Custom Class
Major Attributes:
Major Skills:
- Destruction
- Restoration
- Conjuration
- Mysticism (or Blade for back-up)
- Light Armor
- Sneak
- Security
How to make the best Ranged Custom Class in Oblivion Remastered
Archery is probably the most overpowered archetype in Oblivion, because, paired with Sneak, you can fire off massive critical hits with no risk to yourself.
Archers are also very useful for exploring due to their Speed and Agility. However, it’s not all upside. If you’re caught at close range it can be tough to work your way out of that tight spot due to low health and damage resistance, plus there’s more skill involved in lining up precise shots rather than swinging a sword.
Either way, Marksmen are deadly in the right hands, especially once their stats start to reach Journeyman level with a few key Skills – that’s why it’s important to give them an early boost. For more on the best bows and equipment we have a dedicated page on the best Marksman build.
