First Things First

Super Fantasy Kingdom is a game about exploration. This guide will most likely spoil some aspects of the game for you. If you don’t want to explore all the mechanics of the game by yourself, go on reading. But if you want to experience the game as our king intended, stop right there, and keep on playing. You will manage to crack it eventually and all on your own, I promise.

Why am I writing this guide then? There seem to be a lot of people frustrated because they think they hit some wall or are in a plateau of progress. So I am simply sharing some of the epiphanies I had while playing the game. But again: all of this should – all on its own – come to those exploring the game and its mechanics.

Roguelike

  • TL;DR: You will die a lot. Keep on trying, and change your approach.

Let’s talk about managing your expectations. Super Fantasy Kingdom is a roguelike game. Roguelikes are grindy, full of deaths and highly replayable. Don’t expect the game to be easy. Don’t expect the majority of your runs to be successful. Losing is part of the experience. You will lose a lot. Sometimes those lost runs feel frustrating but ideally you should learn something about the game’s mechanics every time you have to start again.

That being said, there is a lot to learn, so keep on playing and most importantly keep on changing your approaches to tackle the game. Some builds just don’t work but what you discarded as “not worth it” at some point may be viable at another stage of the game. So keep on trying different stuff.

Resource Management

  • TL;DR: Prioritize econ as long as you don’t die.

In my opinion, the best part of Super Fantasy Kingdom is the very limited number of resources. We are talking about situations in which single digit costs are just too much to afford. In general it is not possible to build every building there is. Neither is it possible to get all streets covered in stone. Every run you have to decide where you want to spend your resources on. That’s the puzzle. I am solving it this way: Push econ as far as possible without dying.

Your resources can on the one side go into more production of resources or faster transportation or more efficient means of production. On the other side, you have to survive because a full storage is of no use for those who are dead. But more resources mean more options to push your survivability. So I happened to choose the strategy to push my economy – that’s the production of resources and coins and faith – as long as I can assume not to die. That assumption relies on experience, but after only a few runs, you should be able to tell how many waves you can beat with just your hero and the unit you get on day 2. (Spoiler for after beating curse 0: Or with your additional starting unit.) If you can assess that, you can put all your resources into econ for the first few days. A strong early game really is important.

The Perfect Start (Human)

  • TL;DR: Choose your starting resources (witch and outposts) in a way you can upgrade the castle twice (3 stone, 5 gold ore), get an additional carrier (5 wheat) and at least one house (4 wood). Then gather wood to build a second house (8 wood) and the farm (5 wood) then gather wheat to build 2 decorations (4 + 8 wheat).

The perfect start does not exist. And if it did, it would be highly dependent on the state of progression you are at. But there are a few things that will kickstart your run. This is my approach: faster taxes, more carriers, more workers, gold generation. Getting 3 stone, 5 gold ore, 4 wood and 5 wheat through the witch and the outposts will let you upgrade the castle once, build 1 house and the stables. Then you should gather wood for one more worker. That’s 8 wood for the second house. And after that you need 5 wood for a farm that will give you 4 wheat and 8 wheat for 2 decorations that will generate lots of money for you.

That at least should be your goal. If it is not possible to build all that without dying, try leaving something out. Or use some resources for defenses.

Another approach would be to go for planks as early as possible to build the church and the port. Then starting the voyage and gathering lots of berries for buffing buildings with nuns. Also viable. Try what fits best to you.

The Perfect Start (Undead)

  • TL;DR: Choose your starting resources (witch and outposts) in a way you can upgrade the castle twice (3 bone, 5 blood), build a sewage plant (4 bone) to get an additional carrier (7 ooze) and a house (6 stone) that you upgrade ASAP (8 bone).

I have not played the undead kingdom that much. But the approach is basically the same as for the humans: more taxes, an additional carrier, more workers. That is 3 bone for the first castle upgrade and 5 blood for the second one (though this one will not be possible for long). Then you want to get the sewage plant going ASAP. That’s 4 bone. It generates sewage for you to build a house (7 ooze). If you can push your ooze counts by starting resources or the witch or outposts, do so. You also want to use 6 stone to build a house for skeleton generation and the first 8 bones should upgrade that house.

The undead are very good with synergies. Those take a long time to set up, though. I figured that bloat hunting is the way to go. The quarry has to be upgraded to get more bloats and you need the graveyard to get more graves for that. You then can upgrade the blood bank to use the bloat corpses for blood generation. Generating blood from rats is not really worth it if you don’t need just one more blood.

Fighting

  • TL;DR: For the start, do pure physical builds and fight magical enemies, or vice versa. And read other people’s guides, I guess.

I am not that deep into the meta of fighting. I am a simple guy and I like following simple rules. Physical damage is good against magical enemies and magical damage is good against physical units. So I am going with builds that are all physical or all magical and I am choosing the respective other kind for my enemies.

Other people have built tier lists and guides that you can consult if you are into it. I am not and I am winning, nonetheless.

Proceeding on Progression Plateaus

  • TL;DR: Do everything the game has to offer. Play both kingdoms, unlock what you can unlock, try different builds, get units and relics you did not take before.

Super Fantasy Kingdom rewards you for trying things you did not try before. You should do that. Everything that is unlockable, you should unlock. And everything you unlocked, you should try out. The important thing here is the undead kingdom. The stars you get and the units you unlock count for both kingdoms. So fighting the first bosses in the undead kingdom will give you stars that will lead to more unlocks in the human kingdom and the heroes you unlock in the undead kingdom will give you Kingdom experience for more unlocks in the human kingdom.

If you think you hit a wall it most likely is because you have not unlocked everything or you did not explore everything there is to explore.
