Guide on Who You Should Unlock

Ву Mynamemeansbentnose.

Need a quickie on who you should unlock? Sure, here’s a relatively simple guide. I’m not here to go in depth on how each Hero should be played, but I can provide some bare bones suggestions so you know what you’re getting.

HK= Human Kingdom. UK= Undead Kingdom. Now, alphabetically:

  • Alaric: Early Pick.
  • Cadus: Late Pick.
  • Cole: Mid Pick
  • Gideon: Early Pick.
  • Grumdil: Late Pick.
  • Mort: Late Pick.
  • Qhe’la: Early Pick.
  • Rickard: Late Pick.
  • Selene: Mid Pick.
  • Sheva: Early Pick.
  • Thea: Early Pick.

Okay, Okay, Reasons.

Basically, the pick suggestion is based on how easy a unit is to make work, how fun they feel and access to supporting units. When I say Early, Mid and Late, that’s mostly in reference to other Heroes. I suggest unlocking Early picks before Late picks, but how deep into the game difficulty you unlock them is up to you.

This is all absolutely subjective, but still works for a quick primer on what you might like. Scroll down and I’ll tell you a bit more about them all.

Alaric – Easy to Use

HK random find. UK story hero.

The Vampire Hero, a mage unit with excellent range and good damage. It’s not hard to slot him into a group for some good damage but you need to remember to bring a little bit more tanking when you get past the early game.

He can be upgraded to provide some healing as well. Alaric depends on bleeds, which leads to blood burst, a proc that drains max hp when you inflict enough stacks of bleed. Works with units like werewolf and archer. Okay against bosses.

Cadus – Bad Self Defense

HK Random Hero. UK starter Hero.

The careless knight. Cadus has very little active defense, leaving the task of tanking and close attack to entirely different units. He is bad at defending himself. What he is good for is sticking to a unit and beating it down, a task that Rickard is terrible at. His passives create a small army of supporting units and can let Cadus absorb some damage to other units with his shield. Part of my late pick designation is because you’re going to have your fill of Cadus with UK.

Obviously helps with minions and summons, he tends to thin out the middle and needs supporting units that have no problem attacking to the sides. Good against bosses, has the range and doesn’t get pulled by minions.

Cole – Fire, Mid Range

Random Hero.

Charging Fireball. Rage mage with okay damage and range. He charges, inflicting fire damage on what he passes through then blows up in a fireball at medium range to inflict burning damage. Can withstand some damage due to rage meter.

Good at base difficulty, but quickly runs into problems after. I didn’t find as much luck with Cole without good synergy units which come a little later in the game. With those units though, such as Jailer and Devil, he does become quite strong. Okay against bosses.

Gideon – Good All Rounder

HK story Hero. UK random Hero.

Midrange tanky mage type. Hard to go wrong with Gideon, he does a lot of things rather well. Shield tank, good splash damage with good debuff. Medium range hits most things that need hitting.

Gideon is easy to fit into just about any comp and both his upgrade paths are decent. More effective against mage enemies as his Radiance debuff reduces magic defense. He feels good to use. Decent against bosses, sometimes has to be moved forward.

Grumdil – Limited Range Berserker, High Difficulty

Random Hero.

Jumping damage dealer. Can be a bit difficult to use. Does shock damage and has a thin medium range attack area with some splash damage. Can absorb some damage due to rage.

Grumdil is a higher difficulty Hero to use because of his range, he can’t defend his body, worse than Cadus, better than Selene. I haven’t had a lot of success, but that’s more because I haven’t taken the time I think. Great damage against bosses, as long as they’re in his range.

Mort – Debuff Mage, fun But Harder to Use

HK Random Hero. UK story Hero.

I find him funny, but he does take more work to use well. Mort has a very small splash attack area and inflicts fatigue (armor debuff, enemies take more physical damage). His stated range is about medium, but Mort will wander the entire field before he comes back to defend his body.

He’s a wandering debuffer that can hit a lot of things surprisingly quickly, but you only know where he is by the debuff graphics. Needs units to protect him and deal out mucho damage. His other upgrade path uses fear effects, which can be useful with Abomination, Dino and Banshee. Okay against bosses.

Qhe’la – Spider Tonk!

Random Hero.

Well, the tank part is questionable, but her minions are great. Her upgrades have good supporting utility too. Qhela is pretty strong, scattering minions in a cone that can poison or stun enemies depending on build while still doing good damage.

Her utility is good, making her a useful support Hero who can take a few hits. I usually go the stunning route with her upgrades. Has a harder time against some bosses due to the random movement of her minions.

Rickard – Vanilla Tank

Human Starter. UK random Hero.

Rickard. Just about everyone quickly comes to understand Rickard. He is fantastic in early game, taking down most problems coming his way and absorbing a reasonable number of hits. He falls off quick though. His damage upgrade path is a harder variant to run, while his defense path is fantastic for shield heavy comps and even a bit of economic utility. He’s unlikely to help early Undead play as the Undead Kingdom has fewer shield tanks until you can unlock some units, which probably makes him better to leave as a late pick. If you’re frustrated with Cadus not defending himself though, Rickard is better in this regard.

He works well with a bunch of shield units, but don’t get that mixed up with armor. Rickard’s damage falls behind in later levels, so other units will have to take up the slack. He is reasonable against bosses, but you have to make sure he’s at the front of the party to reach those bosses at times.

Selene – Heaviest Artillery / Terrible Early Game

Random Hero

First things first, she has very poor self defense. Anyone who has tried her knows this very well. Once enemies get past her line of patrol, she’s an easy target. If her patrol does bump into enemies, she does target them. This bump shot behaviour is a Huge deal, but not at first. Anything that sneaks by, something else has to deal with. So she needs help. She often needs help on day 1. This more than anything else makes her a bad early game pick. You need to be able to bring out a crossbowman or soldier on day one to keep her alive.

You will be rewarded for this.

Now, you must understand, with a bit of attention on your part, this character hits like a truck. She has great damage and great crit. Her faith side upgrade is good for damage and some utility (easy church quest). Her Ice side upgrade has piercing and crit. When the mob groups get tight enough, she starts doing so much damage, this is my go to for hitting new glory caps. Enough so that I avoid using her gratuitously to avoid spoiling myself. Get her supporting units like the Yeti and Rogue who bring you access to their respective crit relics, and she’ll do some work I’m telling you she’ll take you places people complaining about her are why I made this guide.

Anyways.

Can’t hit Blobb so make sure to summon Goblin King unless you’re confident in your helpers. Destroys most other bosses with prejudice with her bump shots.

Sheva – Pull Mage

Random Hero.

A mounted Mage, she charges out and sends out splashes of water effect attacks that pull enemies. She does decent damage at decent range and provides useful utility for the right kind of supports. Because she pulls groups into tight packs, this increases the effectiveness of units that have splash damage. Your Swordsman always wants the enemy groups in a tight pack for instance. She feels pretty good to use I think.

She provides the Wet debuff which extends all other debuffs, or she can grant other units healing with her alternate path. You have to think about what units to bring along though, it’s not so easy to find other water element units to synergize with her base type. Okay against bosses with decent range and damage.

Thea – Sunburst Mage / She’ll Carry You

HK story unit. UK random unit.

There’s a good chance you’ll unlock her in the UK long before you can manage the same in the HK. Ironic, since she’s so strong. She charges out in a manner similar to Cole and Sheva, but attacks by shooting out a burst of piercing light shards in all directions. She does great damage in a wide area and her upgrades are also strong, Thea is a good unit for pushing Glory thresholds.

She needs some close in defense of course, but is relatively easy to throw into most comps. A bit weaker against bosses due to her attack spread.
