The region of Qinghe in Where Winds Meet is steeped in the history of bloody battles and wise warriors. These factions left secret knowledge behind for those who are brave enough to look, and those who are clever enough themselves to solve the devious symbol puzzle they constructed to guard their secret.
This page contains a walkthrough guide for the entire Echoes of Old Battles quest in Where Winds Meet, as well as the solution to the wall symbol puzzle which is sure to stump even the keenest minds.
Echoes of Old Battles Walkthrough
As you approach the burned out settlement in the southern part of Qinghe, listen to the eavesdropping wanderer outside the fortress walls and he will let slip about the treasure of the Northern Vow.
Enter the ruined fortress, then defeat some of the enemies inside.
On your left, there’s a training arena where who looks to be the leader of the bandits is interrogating a prisoner. Defeat the bandit leader, then look at the treasure map he leaves behind.
It’s difficult to spot – especially if you’re colourblind like me – but there are red circles around the flaming contraptions next to the southern and northwestern walls, as well as the contraption at the top of the training arena where you first found the bandit leader.
Make sure these contraptions are lit, and a circular structure will rise from the ground.
Perform a Heavenly Slam by clicking in the stick while in the air and a new area will reveal itself.
Descend into the catacombs and push open the chamber. Inside you find a deceased warrior in a strange pose, which turns out to be the unique salute of the Northern Vow.
Continue through the underground area and you’ll find another large chamber. Interact with the statue and your character will automatically perform the right emote, which causes symbols to appear on the walls.
Echoes of Old Battles Wall Symbol Solution
The goal of this puzzle in Where Winds Meet is to recreate the sacred motto of the Northern Vow by using the illuminated symbols on the chamber walls.
The correct symbols are found in Clue 3.
You want to push in the blocks which don’t feature in the clue, so that the remaining illuminated blocks spell out the Northern Vow’s Motto.
To do this:
- On the left-hand wall, push in the furthest block in the top-left corner.
- On the right-hand wall, push in the first and third interactable blocks.
- This spells about the Northern Vow motto on the walls, allowing you passage through to the next room.
After this, drop down into the cave with the water wheel, where your objective changes to unclogging the wooden structure.
Go through the waterfall into the hidden cave behind it, then interact with the chain attached to the cave wall. This loosens the waterwheel and opens the final stone gate.
Push through the last door and you find yourself in the resting place of the Northern Vow, where they made their final stand against invading forces.
The “treasure” is in fact knowledge of their signature technique, a Mystic Art known as the Touch of Death. This allows you to strike unaware enemies for a huge spike of damage with what’s essentially a stealth attack.
Read the inscription on the wall behind the chest and a cutscene will play, completing the quest. Interact with the white icon behind you to leave the secret chamber and return to the surface.
