Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty won’t have an easy mode

Team Ninja has said that its upcoming masocore action game, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, only features one difficulty level so that “everyone has the same experience,” but player choice will be the key to overcoming its obstacles.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Xbox Game Pass in early 2023 as a masocore (Soulslike) action-adventure game. Speaking to MP1st recently, Team Ninja producer Masaaki Yamagiwa explained why the team decided to go with a single difficulty level for the game.

Featuring Chinese martial arts, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty puts us in the shoes of a militia soldier fighting for survival in the Three Kingdoms, except this is a darker version of the tale, with demonic entities and supernatural elements aimed at testing your skills with each encounter. As is a staple in the masocore and Soulslike genres, Wo Long is designed to be difficult, and as such, Team Ninja won’t allow you to change the difficulty settings so everybody has the same experience, more or less. Well, the difficulty will be the same, but how you choose to tackle each obstacle can vary wildly from player to player by the sounds of it.

Yamagiwa explained that Team Ninja thinks it’s “good” to have a set difficulty for the game, so when you’ve beaten a boss or difficult enemy, you can chat with your friends to compare strategies, but that all hangs on giving players enough choice to tackle situations in multiple ways. “It’s really important to keep the challenge the same and give players different ways to overcome it,” Yamagiwa said. “Wo Long is not an easy game by any means but we’re working to give players as much freedom and agency to play it as they want, [and] overcome obstacles in their own way.”

One of the features that Team Ninja has implemented to aid player choice is the morale system, which acts as a rank system that sees you increase in power as your character levels up. It’ll offer you ways to choose which enemies to fight, and give you a chance to fight harder enemies, and as you continue your adventure in the usual action RPG manner, you’ll slowly feel encounters becoming easier. If that fails, though, there is always three-player co-op multiplayer to help you take down the pesky bosses. “We’re really giving players their own ways to be able to tackle all these things, that’s really important to Wo Long’s game design,” Yamagiwa said.
