“Why you gotta do us like that J.O.E.L?” Helldivers 2 players are trying to have their mines and save those “moderately feeble” kids too, but it seems Arrowhead’s game master isn’t on board

Helldivers 2 players had a plan. It was ambitious and it was going well. However, it looks like Arrowhead’s Galactic War overseer wasn’t a fan, as the divers have ended up being rapidly pushed back to nearly square one on a key planet they’d previously captured.

For some context, the game’s latest big mission has presented players with a choice – capture one planet and unlock some new gas mines, or capture another and save some “moderately feeble young adults”. The latter’s been more popular than you might assume if you’re an infrequent diver, because it has some sentimental value.

As we reported yesterday, there’d been some early sigs the game’s community might try to avoid choosing by capturing both planets via some clever strategy and hard fighting. That’s exactly what they’ve given a go, taking hold of the key gateway planet of Bekvam III in pretty rapid fashion.

However, it seems game master J.O.E.L and the automatons weren’t keen to give up that easily, as not long after it was liberated, Bekvam III suffered a big assault that’s ground it back down to only 32% liberation percentage as of writing, a number that seems to be gradually going back up as the divers battle to regain ground against a pretty tough opposing force.

Naturally, this has been a step backwards in their master plan to take both planets, and that’s sparked some frustration on the Helldivers subreddit, via posts entitled things like “Why you gotta do us like that Joel?” and “I think we might [have] angered JOEL a bit too much“.

“I’m sorry but having the Automatons invade a planet we just defended is just frustrating”, one particularly miffed player argued, “I get why this was done. Lore reasons and Arrowhead really wants us to make an decision. But we made a decision. We made the decision to work together to defend both planets to get gas and the help the students. We worked together for this. That’s one of the very things this game is all about. Yet we accomplish it and it’s instantly taken away.

“As far as I’m concerned I’m making sure we take Bekvam back again,” they added, “Along with securing Charon or Charbal. Our decision of the students and mines will be successful. J.O.E.L. will accept our decision one way or another.”

Thankfully there are some folks in these threads who’re taking it a little less personally, so not everyone’s sworn revenge of Arrowhead’s armchair general, especially given his job’s to serve as an effective, challenging foil to the divers’ efforts.
