Tracking down Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen HM locations is essential to making it through not just your primary journey, but to seeing all that the Sevii Islands have to offer once you become Pokemon Champion as well. These aren’t quite as difficult to track down as TMs, especially since you’re supposed to find them to progress. However, if you’re not exploring, it’s easy to miss a few nonessential HMs and lose out on moves that make combat and travel easier.
Below, we show you where to find every HM location in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, including what each HM does.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen HM locations
Bear in mind that, unlike in later games, these moves are permanent unless you have the move deleter force your Pokemon to forget them. So think carefully before deciding who learns what.
HM01 (Cut): Acquired from the SS Anne’s captain. Unmissable
HM02 (Fly): Obtained on Route 16
HM03 (Surf): Obtained deep in the Safari Zone
HM04 (Strength): Obtained from the Safari Zone warden when you give him his false teeth
HM05 (Flash): Found on Route 2
HM06 (Rock Smash): Found on Island 1
HM07 (Waterfall): Found on Island 4
Rock Smash and Waterfall aren’t moves you’ll need during the main part of FireRed and LeafGreen’s adventure, and you can’t access the Sevii Islands until you become Pokemon Champion. So don’t worry about getting those for a while. Flash is a bit of an albatross, since it’s necessary to get through key points, but not particularly useful in battle. It’s basically the same as sand attack and usually not worth taking up a move slot for. Strength is decently powerful, but it’s also required for getting through key locations like Victory Road.
